The Nursing and Midwifery Unit oversees and evaluates all nursing personnel, including registered nurses and midwives. The Unit guides staffing procedures, sets objectives and long-term goals for the Nursing Department, and fosters a collaborative and efficient work environment that emphasizes quality standards and compliance with hospital policies. It ensures that all nursing personnel are able to provide the highest standard of patient care.
The Unit is responsible for:
- Defining, establishing, and maintaining standards of nursing practice;
- Establishing and maintaining an organizational structure that supports the delivery of quality nursing care;
- Collaborating actively with the medical staff to achieve an integrated, holistic, multidisciplinary approach to patient care;
- Liaising with schools of nursing to maintain a strong collaborative relationship between nursing education and nursing services;
- Creating an educational and professional practice environment conducive to the development of nursing staff for management and leadership roles;
- Participating in the hospital's strategic planning process by contributing to the development of its vision, mission, and strategic objectives;
- Developing action plans for nursing services that align with the hospital's strategic plan and objectives;
- Participating in the development of the hospital's organizational and Nursing Directorate strategic plans;
- Preparing periodic reports on Nursing Directorate activities for the Hospital Director General;
- Ensuring effective communication within Nursing Services and between the Nursing Directorate and hospital management by maintaining open, two-way communication with all categories of nursing staff;
- Conducting quarterly and annual performance evaluations of nursing managers and nursing staff;
- Representing the Nursing Directorate on interdepartmental committees;
- Promoting nursing community activities that enhance the image of the nursing profession and improve the quality of patient care;
- Collaborating with the Nursing Unit at the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other nursing management teams to promote evidence-based nursing practice and research;
- Supervising all nursing care activities throughout the hospital;
- Supervising the management, utilization, and ordering of drugs, medical supplies, and medical equipment;
- Supervising the cleanliness of hospital premises and ensuring compliance with hygiene and aseptic standards by all nursing staff;
- Participating in physicians' ward rounds and general patient visits;
- Ensuring that nursing staff implement and comply with instructions issued by physicians and the Hospital Management Committee;
- Participating in performance evaluations within clinical services; and
- Participating in the evaluation and professional development of nursing staff.
