Overview
Muhororo hospital is old hospital, has started its activities since 1952; the hospital was built by
the Belgium government in partnership with the government of Rwanda. It is the hospital of
Ngororero administrative District located in Western province with a 138 beds capacity. It has
both clinical and non-clinical 140 staffs and in 2022,
It is located in Gasave, Karehe and Rusumo village, Kamasiga and Rusumo cell, Gatumba sector,
Ngororero District, Western Province; it is located at 46.5 km from Muhanga to Ngororero
across the road near Gatumba commercial center. The population Muhororo hospital
catchment area is 202.538, but it serves also a big number of people mostly from near Districts
like Muhanga, and other different areas of the whole country. Muhororo hospital supervises
the following 9 health centers: Muhororo, Rubona, Ntobwe, Gashubi, Kageyo, Ntaganzwa,
Rususa, Nyange A, and Nyange B health centers and 3 health extinction centers : Nyamisa,
Bwira, and Kiziguro.

Clinical departments
Our Hospital’s scope of services includes inpatient and outpatient diagnosis and treatment as
well. All departments collaborate to provide the best care possible for our patients, to improve
clinical outcomes, and achieve our mission, vision and goals.
Each individual area of the hospital will have a defined scope of services which includes the
types and ages of patients served, the hours of operation, staffing, the types of services
provided, and the goals or plans to improve quality of service. For each program or service, the
hospital defines the appropriate professional staff and facilities needed to provide the services
in a manner consistent with district Hospital’s mission.
Medical Staff
All departments providing patient care have established lines (phones) of communication with
the medical staff. Scope of care and service of each member of the medical staff is delineated
through the clinical privileging process according to the bylaws of the medical staff. The
Emergency and maternity Departments, physicians are onsite 24 hours per day, seven (7) days
per week to meet patient care needs. Individual service committee scope of services is
outlined.
Nursing Services
Nursing Services is under the direction of Nursing and midwives of the Hospital. Nursing
services are provided in all direct patient care nursing units. The Director of nursing and the
individual unit nurse managers are held responsible for the nursing professional standards of
the hospital, the responsibility for the standards of care and practice, performance assessment
and improvement, policies and procedures, nursing staffing plans, personnel competency and
nursing licensure within the Departments. Collaborative activities have been established to
ensure that these responsibilities are addressed in all areas throughout the organization where
nursing care is provided.
The Director of nursing and midwives assumes an active leadership role in the hospital's
decision making structures and process.
The director of nursing and midwives ensures the provision of nursing services, in the hospital,
24 hours a day, seven (7) days per week. Nursing care is accomplished through the execution of
the nursing assessment and plan of care; patient education, drug administration, supervising,
delegating and evaluating. This includes implementation of nursing standards of care and
practice.
Pharmacy Department:
The hospital pharmacy is occupied by a qualified pharmacist and registered nurses.
It's responsible for drug-based services in the hospital, including:
- The purchasing, supply and distribution of medication and pharmaceuticals
- Inpatient and outpatient medication dispensing.
- The rational drug use monitoring.
- Handling prescription.
- Preparing medication.
- Data entry.
- Provide directive and counseling from medication.
- Delivering medicines.
Physiotherapy department
The Physiotherapy Department provides prescribed therapies/tests for the inpatient and
outpatient. Therapy is performed at the patient bedside or in the Physiotherapy department.
The Physiotherapy department delivers comprehensive services to individuals with physical
dysfunction secondary to disability, disease or injury in accordance with professional standards
of practice. Services include reception, comprehensive assessments, development of treatment
plans, delivery and documentation of care, re-evaluation, and discharge planning and
patient/family education. The personnel in the Physiotherapy department possesses the
appropriate skill level to provide safe, competent and accurate care as defined under the scope
of care as following: Reception, Patient identification, Consultation, therapy Massage,
Mobilization, Stretching, Therapeutic exercises, Electrotherapy, Chest physiotherapy, Wax
bath, Strapping, correction of different malformation. Follow up and Provide right information
to the next step of health care to be provided.
Accident and Emergency department:
The Accident and Emergency Department is a Level one emergency treatment facility which is
open 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week, staffed with licensed physicians and nursing
personnel at all times.
The department provides evaluation and treatment to patients of various ages and varying
levels of illness from minor to critical. All patients presenting to the facility requesting
emergency treatment are medically screened by the Emergency Department physician (triage).
The accident and Emergency Department patients are then evaluated for response to
treatment and are admitted to the hospital, transferred for further necessary treatment not
provided by the facility or transferred in suitable department for continuous care after critical
or discharged with follow-up instructions as appropriate in the following manner: Admission,
Consultation, First Aid, Inpatient registration, External referral, Follow-up of patient within
48hours, Patient orientation in the ward concerning with his / her illness.
Outpatient department
The outpatient service offers services to patients whom the conditions are not critical; they are
evaluated and treated by the physician and go back home the same day. Some of them are
given an appointment to come back again for follow up. It’s also possible to transfer patient for
further management to referral hospital if the case can’t be managed in our facility as it is done
for emergency and other inpatient clients. This service works from Monday to Friday 7: AM to
5: PM and closes on holidays, for every working day there are two to three nurses, a
Receptionist and others work with appointed physicians. This service offers service including
Admission, Outpatient registration, Consultation, Provide right information to the next step of
health care to be provided, Medical prescription, External referral and Follow-up of patient
with chronic illness in collaboration with allied health professional departments such as
Physiotherapy, Mental health department, Laboratory department, and Medical Imaging
department.
Maternity department
The maternity department offers service of hospitalization and other different health care to
our clients in different areas:
Maternity care with spontaneous delivery care and if necessary caesarian section.
Gynecologic related problems
Post caesarian wound infection care
The service works every day 24hours, it has qualified midwives and nurses who offer day to day
care and a day to day ward round done by a physician.
1.8. Internal medicine department
The department offers different services to adult patients with age varying from 15 years to old
age. Patients with different pathologies get the prevention, curative, rehabilitative and palliative care. It provides daily follow up by doing ward rounds for the good recovery of the
patients. The difficult cases are transferred to tertiary for further management. The
department has separate wards for male and female; it has also some private rooms and
isolation rooms. It is staffed by certified and registered nurses and physicians.
Pediatric department
Patients receiving service are aged from 29 days to 14 years old male and female. They get
prevention, curative, rehabilitative and palliative care for different diseases. It is staffed by
certified and registered nurses with experiences in the management of different pediatric
diseases and more in pediatric emergency. There is also a permanent physician who does day
to day follow up for the patients.
Neonatology department
The unity of neonatology operates 24 hours per day and 7 days per week. It is staffed by
registered nurses and midwives. It deals with routine neonatal care, neonatal infections,
neonatal complications, low birth weight and prematurity management.
1.11. Surgery department
The surgery department operates 24 hours per day and 7 days/7. It provides basic and
advanced surgical procedures. General practitioner physician’s major and minor surgeries are
done using different surgical techniques. The referral to other hospitals is done when
necessary.
Laboratory department
Our laboratory allows performing testing for diagnosis and provides treatment information of
diseases to caregivers and patients. The laboratory works 24/7 and contains the following
services: Reception and Phlebotomy, Mycobacteriology, Microbiology, Immuno-serology and
CD4, Parasitology, Biochemistry and Hematology.
Medical Imaging department
The Medical imaging department is a comprehensive service providing clinical application of
imaging technology (RX and ultrasounds) 24 hours per day, seven (7) days per week. Services
are provided to the inpatient and outpatient population of all ages. Diagnostic results reporting are continuously transmitted to the ordering physician's office. The following service
are provided by the that service: Reception , X ray request, Patient identification, Patient
history , Taking X ray examination (skeletal imaging, chest , abdomen and special exams) ,
Image processing, Image drying, Image identification, Interpretation of result, and Feedback or
findings.
Ambulance services
Our ambulance service work 24 hours per day. The service is provided to the referral process
from our hospital to the national referral hospital and transfer process. The services offered as

People living with HIV (ARVs) CLINIC
The people living with HIV services work for 9 hour per day, five day per week. It prove the
following services: Admission, Counseling, Enrollment , Consultation, Prophylaxis, CD4, Viral
load, Change Communication Behavior for eligible on ARV drugs, Prescription, Reception of
prescription Handling prescription, Preparing medicine, Data entry, Provide directive and
counseling from medicine, Delivering medicines, Home visit on adherence and Follow up.
.Dental department
The dental service services operates 9 hour per day, five days per week. It provides the
following services: Admission and registration, Consultation, Prescription, Dental therapeutic
process, Teeth extraction, Scaling and polishing, Permanent filling, Temporary filling, Taking
dental x ray, Gingivictomy, Periodontal pocket Curettage, Labial Frenectomy , Deviation
decisive et canine, Composite build up, Oral health education, Operculoctomy, Apicectomy,
Reduction of alveolar born and fixation, and Surgical extraction
Nutrition department
The Nutrition unit provides clinical application for nutrition therapy and education. It offers
also the Reception, Screening, Evaluation and Follow up and Provide right information to the
next step of health care to be provided.
Ophthalmology department
The ophthalmology department operates 9 hours per day, five days per week. It deals with eye
diseases by assessing, prescription of medication and refers the patients to most specialized
referral hospitals.
Non-communicable diseases clinic
The non-communicable diseases service operates 9 hours per day, five days per week. It deals
with non-communicable diseases by assessing, prescription of medication and other specific
acts follow up, and refer the patients to most specialized referral hospitals.
Isange one stop center
Isange one stop center was operating since 2013 as GBV service; it became full Isange one stop
center since July 2017. It has 1 Staff of RIB, Psychologist and mental health nurse who support
victims in different acts including comprehensive counseling.
Mental Health department
The mental health department operates for 9 hours per day, five days per week. It deals with
psychiatric disorders, prescription of medication and refers the patients to most specialized
referral hospitals.
